Contranyms

The word contronym (also antagonym) is used to refer to words that, by some freak of language evolution, are their own antonyms. Both contronym andantagonym are neologisms; however, there is no alternative term that is more established in the English language.

Contronyms are special cases of homographs (two words with the same spelling). Some examples:

apology - admission of fault in what you think, say, or do; formal defense of what you think, say, or do
bolt - secure, run away
cleave - separate, adhere
custom - usual, special
discursive - proceeding coherently from topic to topic, moving aimlessly from topic to topic
enjoin - prescribe, prohibit
fast - quick, unmoving
grade - incline, level
handicap - advantage, disadvantage
left - remaining, departed from
mean - average, excellent (e.g., "plays a mean game")
oversight - error, care
pitted - with the pit in, with the pit removed
quiddity - essence, trifling point
ravel - tangle, disentangle
sanction - approve, boycott
transparent - invisible, obvious
unbending - rigid, relaxing
variety - one type (e.g., "this variety"), many types (e.g., "a variety")
wear - endure through use, decay through use

I shaved for the very first time today...o''o. This is kinda new and weird for me since...does shaving make you a man?....or less of a man? Firstly, I guess, shaving means that you're a man but in the process you're kind of just shaving off an iconic symbol of being a man (THE MOUSTACHE)

The reason I shaved was because I needed to attend a UWS interview today...and it was such a random experience. I signed a confidentiality form so I can't really go into detail but it's sooo different from a panel interview etc. Hmmm hopefully it went alright. I think I can be a horrible person at times. D=
